Minimally invasive release of plantar fascia.
A clinical retrospective study

Introduction: The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate the clinical results of minimally invasive release of plantar fascia for recalcitrant plantar fasciitis. Minimally invasive release of plantar fascia gains acceptance lately and this study comes to add up to the existing data.
Methods: During the period 2008-2011, 15 (16 feet) patients with an average age of 58.4 (27-71) years old underwent minimally invasive surgical release of plantar fascia. VAS (visual analogue scale) score and AOFAS (American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society) Ankle hindfoot Score were used for the assessment of clinical results regarding the pain and functional ability.
Results: No postoperative complications were recorded. At an average follow-up of 4,9 years 14 (15 feet) of the 15 patients were evaluated at our clinic and improvement of the AOFAS score was recorded as 89.7 points (range, 73-99) compared with the preoperative
value of 58.5 points (range, 51-69). Mean VAS score was 7.7 preoperatively in comparison to the value of 2.7 at 3-month follow-up.
Conclusions: According to these results, minimally invasive release of plantar fascia seems a reliable and safe option in the management of recalcitrant plantar fasciitis.
